Grupo Orgánico Nacional S.A. ("Grupo") is the pioneer company in Peru for the production and export of organic quinoa and other organic grains such as amaranth and sesame seeds, as well as chia.
Grupo's organic quinoa project was started in 1985 in Puno, near Lake Titicaca, in the south of Perú. Its organic sesame seed project began in 1994 in the Valley of the Apurimac River ("Valley") where it substituted illegal coca leaf production in an extensive area; and its organic amaranth project commenced in 1996 in Majes, near Arequipa. Our chia project was started in Cuzco in 2011.
Grupo's organically and kosher certified processing plant is located in the Chorrillos district of Lima, Perú.
Grupo has deep roots and commitment with the producer's communities, specially in its organic quinoa project in Puno.
In the Valley, it has worked with its producers to replace illegal coca leaf production by integrating them into Grupo's organic sesame seed project. And in Majes, amaranth producers have switched from chemical agricultural production, to organic production due to Grupo's pioneering efforts to bring healthier farming techniques.
Our products, under the brand "Gold of the Inkas", have a well established reputation in the organic market after 28 years of supplying excellent quality quinoa, amaranth and natural and hulled sesame seed to some of the best known companies in the United States, Europe and Australia.
Grupo works with hundreds of very poor small producers. Its contracts with those family growers enable them to raise their standards of living. It also works with them to improve their farming techniques, including crop rotation, weather resistance and increase of productivity. Grupo has a fair trade certification, Fair Choice, from Control Union.
In Puno, Grupo has helped to build into its quinoa program an Organic Agricultural School which assists its producers to enhance the yield, quality, and variety of their crops; it has also assisted them to install small irrigation systems with underground water, which protects their crops from drought. As an interesting reference, Peru produced, in 2012, 42,500 MT of quinoa in 35,000 hectares by comparison with Bolivia that produced 34,000 MT in 60,000 hectares.
